Jesse Reyez demonstrates how to thrive after a breakup with remarkable style. In her fourth studio album, A Little Vengeance, she delves into themes of heartbreak, anger, self-awareness, and the discomfort of healing, highlighting the choice of mercy over vengeance. Although not a traditional concept album, it serves as a post-breakup diary exploring various stages of grief. Musically, it stands as a prime example of alternative R&B, featuring moody guitar and subtle rock influences blended with Latin and pop elements. The instrumentation enhances rather than overpowers her vocals, emphasizing the storytelling.
What we appreciate about this project is that she included entirely new songs, without repeating any of her recently released tracks. Each song explores a different facet of heartbreak in its own way.
Our Favorites Include
Everybody Cries - I truly appreciate Jessie for this, as she consistently reminds us that it's okay to be vulnerable and to care for ourselves by expressing our emotions. This song embodies that message.
Ain't U Tired - Muni Long and Jesse Reyez create that best friend chemistry. They speak on behalf of all the girls, even when others claim they can't. They discuss in the third person, questioning why you would look for someone else when you could be with her. Yet, you're here playing games, seeking a diluted version of her.
Ur Heartbeat (Who do You Think About) - The toughest part of leaving a relationship is the contemplation that follows. After everything is over, the tears have dried, and the dust has settled, there's a lingering feeling of still wanting that person, unable to imagine them with someone else, despite the hurt they've caused.
Dusty - "Dusty" is the song that resonates after enduring the pain, when you no longer want that person near you. Their actions serve as a reminder of why you should never pursue a partner. Now that you truly love yourself, you don't need someone who diminishes your worth.
Ego Atrophy -
"EGO ATROPHY" (featuring Bob Marley) is a spiritual and introspective track about shedding aspects that hinder peace, purpose, and community. The title suggests reducing the ego by letting go of pride, fear, anger, and attachments to connect with something greater. The song explores themes such as:
Spiritual growth
Inner peace
Freedom from personal demons
Gratitude for life
Community and collective consciousness
Humility over fame and wealth
Lines like "Keep me close to water, keep me close to God" express a desire for purification and divine guidance, while "I listen more than I speak" signifies learning through observation. The lyric "It's my ego atrophy" suggests growth through losing the need to prove oneself. Mentions of wealth are contrasted with finding peace, emphasizing fulfillment beyond possessions.
Bob Marley's contribution reinforces themes of unity, spirituality, liberation, love, and human connection.
For those that are healing right now this is the project for you
