From Canvas to Cadence: MURLIN Finds His Voice on His Self-Titled EP
It's a wonderful day in the Rawrrzone when emerging talent takes center stage. On October 29th, former giveback show performer Young Murlin unveiled a six-track EP, showcasing his determination to make an impact in New York's independent hip hop scene. This is significant to us because we've watched Young Murlin, also known as Sonny, the son of Amanda Elgin, grow since we met him at 17 or 18. We've witnessed his journey through various art forms, not just music, and it's thrilling to see him advancing with such mastery of his craft. We are eager to see what the future holds for him. On a personal note, it's impossible not to feel proud of him as he ascends to this next stage of his career.
The six track EP gives us a refined and more mature look of what Murlin brought us at the 2024 Big Dreams and Giveback concerts. Bridging the gap of traditional and current hip hop styles we have a mix of Murlin's signature rapping style with clear intent that he is coming for necks. The project gives us the perfect balance of understanding Murlin's relationship between identity , ambition, and trying to make a name in music.
Lets talk a little about the cover, it brings us back to our earlier point. Murlin is such an artistic and creative individual his cover had to match. The graffiti asthetic brings us to memories of the beggining of his journey when he created canvasses but it this more modernized piece of art connects street art, urban culture, and his personality. Making him the center and reinforcing the meaning of the project. The grittyness in the distressed brick texture shows us that he is the diamond in the rough and looks to give us that raw truth in his message. He shows us an artist that wants to be seen and remembered.
Our favorites from the project include "Young Broke, Infamous" "Difference," and "Prodigal Return." Each of these tracks showcases a distinct blend of lyrical prowess and innovative production that truly sets them apart from the rest of the album. From the intricate beat selection to the clever wordplay, these three songs resonated with us on multiple levels, making them stand out as the highlights of the project.
In "Young broke, infamous" Murlin's flow is reminiscent of a unique combination of Jack Harlow and Eminem, particularly in the way he navigates the cadence of his wordplay. The delivery is sharp and engaging, capturing the listener's attention right from the start. The colorful instrumentation throughout the track adds an extra layer of depth, creating a vibrant soundscape that complements the lyrical content perfectly. The upbeat and energetic production invites listeners to immerse themselves in the narrative, which revolves around themes of youth and ambition.
"Difference" showcases the Murlin storytelling prowess, reminiscent of Cordae's narrative style, as he explores the theme of overcoming skepticism. The song serves as a powerful anthem of perseverance and self-confidence, supported by an engaging beat that reinforces its message. The instrumentation is vibrant, combining melodic elements that enhance the storytelling. He integrates personal stories into a wider discussion on societal expectations, making this track especially compelling. It enforces everything we tell ourselves when we are in that race called life. What makes you better than me, I am going to get this no matter what.
Lastly, "Prodigal Return" encapsulates the essence of the project, blending all the elements that make these songs so compelling. The production is polished, with a mix of modern sounds and classic influences that create a timeless feel. The lyrical content is rich with metaphors and vivid imagery, allowing the artist to paint a picture of growth and redemption. Listening to this track invokes a sense of nostalgia while simultaneously feeling fresh and relevant.
As I listen to these three standout songs, I find myself torn because each has the potential to serve as an opener for this project. They each set a different tone, inviting the audience into the artist's world in unique ways all three songs testament to Murlin's versatility and creativity, making it challenging to choose just one as the definitive opener. Each song offers a glimpse into the artist's journey, making them essential pieces of the overall narrative.
Watching MURLIN evolve from the young creative we first met through the Giveback Show into an artist who is beginning to understand his voice, his identity, and his purpose has been a journey in itself. What makes this project special isn't simply the production or his ability to deliver clever wordplay. It's the growth behind the music. We've witnessed his creativity take different forms over the years, and this EP feels like another chapter in an artistic journey that is still being written.
What I appreciate most about this project is that MURLIN isn't trying to convince us that he's already made it. Instead, he's showing us that he understands the work, the sacrifices, and the determination it takes to get there. From the confidence of "Young, Broke, Infamous" to the perseverance behind "Difference" and the reflection found in "Prodigal Return," we're witnessing an artist who is no longer just dreaming about his potential but actively stepping into it.
But here's the question I want to leave everyone with: In an industry where so many artists are chasing recognition, what does it really take to create a legacy that lasts? Is it the numbers, the image, the music, or the ability to remain authentic while evolving?
For MURLIN, I believe the answer is still unfolding. And if this six-track project is any indication of where he's headed, the young man we once watched perform on the Giveback stage is only scratching the surface of what he's capable of.
The dreams are getting bigger, the vision is becoming clearer, and one thing is certain: MURLIN doesn't intend to remain overlooked.
And that's what makes his next chapter worth watching.
