- Community Talk: Love Me Alive Outreach
The open heart of 36-year old Collette Stroud created a non-profit based on restructering communication amongst community members. Her first thought of mobilizing her passsion for neighborhood affairs started in 2015. This is when Stroud first thought of the name Love Me Alive Outreach. "People saying you love them when they're gone. Why don't we say it when they're here?" A quote from Stroud in regard to her programs. The intention of her programs are to highlight cyberbulliyng, suicide rates amongst senior citizens, and creating a safe space for youth and elders alike to reinforce communication. She wants to create an outlet that supports those in need of compassion that may not be able to find it in their own lives. Love Me Alive Outreach is set to launch on July 19th with a Ladies Day Brunch. Stay tuned for the communal work of Collette Stroud.
- Rawrrzone Picks : DPE Family Presents Summa Boys
The Bay Area is turning up the heat this summer with a cinematic hit from the DPE Family in collaboration with C2TV. The track Summer Boys is the lead single for a film set to debut in 2025. Upon hearing the track, Wu-Tang and Marvel immediately come to mind. The movie revolves around a hero versus villain theme, endowing our MCs with lyrical metahuman abilities, starting with: T-Roy - mind control (hypnotic flows) Dosha D'Lyte - Ice Powers (ice bars) Eddy Krow - Electricity (larger-than-life delivery)Top Cat - Power (aggressive delivery) With multiple listens, it evokes the imagery of the X-Men Theme Song, where the Summer Boys battle against evil forces to revive the essence of Hip Hop. In a world filled with commercial music, it was truly refreshing to hear. If you're a comic book enthusiast and love hip hop that's not only conceptual and engaging but also rich in replay value, this song is perfect for you. - Explore Josh Jacobs’ electrifying “PALANTE!”
Josh Jacobs made a significant impact over Memorial Day Weekend with the release of his dynamic four-track project titled Palante! The title comes from the Spanish phrase "pa'lante," meaning moving forward. We haven't seen anyone blend Latin-inspired rhythms with contemporary hip-hop beats so masterfully since Ray Pearson introduced us to Suave Ramon post-pandemic. If Palante! meets Suave Ramon, the Latin hip-hop community in the tristate area will be in for a challenge. Jacobs has been on our radar since his collaboration with Queens' own X-YLE, and in the past year, his tracks Lick Back and 11:11 were among those featured on our Rawrrzone Picks Playlist. Listening to the Palante EP takes me back to Bad Bunny's YHLQMDLG album from 2020, which similarly explores Spanish slang and cultural identity as sources of strength. This project allows Jacobs to reconnect with his Puerto Rican heritage, even hinting at a follow-up project for listeners. Our favorite tracks include the lead single from the EP, "Palante," produced by Charles Lindon, which highlights his dynamic delivery with a theme of perseverance. Meanwhile, "Campos Energy" energizes listeners with its rhythmic beat and motivational tone, making it a perfect addition to any workout playlist. - Kony Brooks Declares Dominance with Genius Level Rap, Vol. 1
Better late than never—but here in the Rawrrzone, we had to take a moment to give flowers where they’re due. March has proven to be an incredible month for entertainment. We came off Kendrick Lamar’s explosive Super Bowl halftime show, WrestleMania is approaching, basketball season is at an all-time high—and Bronx’s very own Kony Brooks blessed fans with his latest project, Genius Level Rap, Vol. 1 . Following the critically acclaimed 2023 release of 855 , this new EP continues to showcase Brooks’ lyrical prowess , dynamic production , and elite storytelling skills . While 855 gave us introspection and vulnerability, Genius Level Rap is a declaration of dominance—five tracks of unfiltered penmanship that reaffirms his status in New York hip-hop. Track-by-Track Breakdown of Genius Level Rap, Vol. 1 1. 5PM on Ocean Drive "I judge character dog, I ain’t even mad at ya, I’m mad at me, I had to let it burn like a calorie. Actually, the apple ain’t fall from the apple tree, both my parents amazed me for putting up with the blasphemy." The project kicks off smoothly with 5PM on Ocean Drive , blending introspective lyricism with a soulful melody. Kony paints the picture of a man grinding through the trenches— working 13-hour days, doing two-a-days, trying to “fit in where the music play.” It’s a line that hits home for every creative balancing a 9–5 life with dreams in motion. The tone is both warm and real—a reminder that the road to success isn't always glamorous. 2. Top 5 in My City (feat. Teddy Grahams) "This about that time when my idols become my rivals, And survival got me back outside so now I’m spraying." This track has been on repeat in our daily commute playlist. Top 5 in My City is an anthem of accomplishment, perseverance, and well-earned self-validation . As an independent creative, Kony uses this moment to reflect on his journey, celebrating how far he’s come while addressing the industry’s oversaturation. And of course, what would a Kony Brooks project be without Teddy Grahams ? The duo consistently levels up with every collaboration—from Black Friday to this latest offering, their chemistry is undeniable. Teddy continues to match Kony’s lyrical energy, showcasing their growth as a duo and as individual artists . 3. Status Updates "My life feels like TikTok cuz every page is for you, Explore your insecurities with King this glow is royal." A standout moment on the EP, Status Updates takes a deep dive into life after COVID-19 , social media anxiety , and the emotional effects of the digital era . Kony explores vulnerability in a raw and unfiltered way, addressing how terrifying it can be to rebuild your life under constant online scrutiny. 4. Genius Level Rap "Break bread on the daily, push my limit to the sky, A BIG deal and a Bad Boy ready to die." The EP’s title track is a lyrical flex that reintroduces fans to the hunger of “backpack Kony” with a more refined twist. It’s classic Kony—bar-heavy, confident, and sharp. The track serves as a reminder of why he’s crowned himself the King of New York . The passion is palpable and the cadence is unstoppable. 5. Skills Over Politics "Pardon my disguise, my demise is what they can't cheat—I been on the rise, I'm the rapper that they can't see. Focussed on my future this delusion what they beat." Kony ends the project with a mic-drop moment . Skills Over Politics is his philosophical thesis on the rap game —a call to bring back authenticity and lyrical talent in an industry often dominated by image and networking. This track draws perfect comparisons to Jay-Z’s “Moment of Clarity” (from The Black Album , 2003), where Hov reflects on the compromises artists make to succeed in the industry. You can also compare it to Kendrick Lamar’s verse on “Control” (with Big Sean and Jay Electronica), where lyrical dominance is prioritized over industry politics. Brooks not only matches that energy—he brings it home with a Bronx-bred authenticity that’s unmatched. 855 vs. Genius Level Rap : Two Sides of the Same Coin Listening to both 855 and Genius Level Rap, Vol. 1 together tells a full story. 855 was a deeply personal, thematically rich album that showcased Kony’s storytelling finesse and emotional depth. While it still flexed his lyrical muscles, its core was vulnerability. Genius Level Rap , on the other hand, is the follow-up that reintroduces Kony Brooks to new fans and solidifies his presence for returning ones . It’s compact, polished, and unapologetically confident. If 855 pulled back the curtain, Genius Level Rap kicks the door down. Final Thoughts Kony Brooks has clearly reached a point in his artistry where the work speaks for itself . The range between 855 and Genius Level Rap, Vol. 1 shows his evolution—not just as a rapper, but as a thought leader and voice for New York’s underground scene. If this is the level of heat he’s bringing from 2023 to 2025, then Genius Level Rap, Vol. 2 might just raise the temperature even higher. 🔗 Stay Connected with Kony Brooks 🌐 www.konybrooks.com 🎧 Stream Genius Level Rap, Vol. 1 on Spotify , Apple Music , and TIDAL

- Binge Talk: Raising Kanan - An Ode to Raquel Thomas
If you are not caught up on Raising Kanan then I suggest you still read this article later. It has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions for me watching the characters' paranoia unravel quicker than the plot twist. The one person I’d like to acknowledge for this piece is the Queen Pin herself, Raquel Thomas. Don’t ever disrespect that woman. This Queen is the epitome of a survivalist. A Black woman’s story that resonates with others in pieces or as a whole, regardless it is relatable. Raquel learned how to hustle from an older boyfriend which is more common than people may think. Her thirst wasn't just drowned in love for Def Con but the enticing intricacies of this ancient hustle we know as drug dealing. Raquel was taught to not only hold her own, but to take control of a market to be able to provide for her family. Raquel learned the game like the bible. As we all can garner from the legality of this career field, there are chances that can get you killed or locked in prison for x amount of years. With all of those elements involved, Raquel was fearless. She even shared the wealth with her brothers. Deep in love she got pregnant with her only child, Kanan. Now she had to balance motherhood, business, and family affairs. Fast forward to Season 4 now, and I am so stressed for her. Raquel’s ambition is worthy of patience. She wants to become a supplier! A top tier name in the game. Instead of falling into the unnecessary bloodshed speared by her Italian connects, she wants to make a power move. Her career field has many stressors so I can see why she would be so snappy but she said sorry more than once to more than one person. When Lou needed rehab she could have killed him, but didn’t. When Marvin wanted to go on a killing spree, she didn’t bat an eyelash. Yes the bloodtrail annoyed her but she still stood by her brother's mistakes. When Kanan decided to sell on his own and kill his partner, Nique’s brother. She blindly eliminated any loose ends. That same loose end wanted Marvin to take the wrap for the family’s illegal reputation. It was cold but she made a move to protect them. Raquel couldn’t even enjoy falling in love. The closest she got to finding a man that understood her all the way through was Nique. You could see it in her eyes. However, due to him almost being killed by his own brother, Nique was laced with too much paranoia to even recognize it. The tension was too hot to let something as beautiful and natural as that thrive. With all that being said, Raquel Thomas may not be perfect but she worked through every position she was pegged into with integrity and love for her family. If she gets killed, I will be so hurt. That woman had to handle some tough decisions but never changed up on anyone. All she wanted was peace of mind, steady business and keeping her family intact. Thank you Patina Miller.

Photo credit: Nico Malvaldi Brooklyn post-punk outfit Dead Tooth return with a new single, " You Never Do Shit" , released via Trash Casual. The track follows last year’s critically praised Birthday boohoo and marks the first release from their upcoming self-titled debut album, due in July. Led by Zach Ellis (guitar/vocals), Dead Tooth's current lineup features James Duncan (bass), Taylor Mitchell (guitar), Mikey Cohen (drums), and John Stanesco (saxophone/EWI).
