Being in the public eye is consistently stressful, but for someone like the original influencer Perez Hilton, constant attention is unavoidable. Since the early 2000s, Perez Hilton has popularized the now-common method of consuming media by creating a blog that documented the daily lives of celebrities. He set a standard for platforms like Hollywood Unlocked and Welcome to the Rawrrzone, illustrating both the dos and don'ts of news reporting (whether positive or negative). For over 20 years, the stress of managing such a platform affected him both physically and mentally, leading him to take a different approach to his platform, allowing him to live a more positive life and move away from his aggressive gossip-style. After his sepsis diagnosis and intense medical treatment earlier this year he relocated to Miami florida where he was assumed to be living a peaceful life of recovery.

Now a days Perez content focuses on reflection while still providing up to date news in a way that does not take a psychological toll on himself and those he reports about. For many we thought he has been on a path of enlightment until last night when Perez went live on tiktok to what have been thought to be a live stream of self-harm.

The tiktok livestream showing Hilton, born Mario Lavandeira Jr full of blood with evidence of self harm on his face and torso. Leading with hundreds of calls to the Miami-Dade sherrifs office taking the celebrity blogger into protective custody.

Reported by the LA Times Authorities said they had “tactically disengaged while continuing to monitor the situation.” In their later update, the Sheriff’s Office said that after the man had been transported to a hospital, mental health professionals were at the scene “providing support and resources to the individual’s family.”

While there is no word from Hilton's representative at this time this incident teaches us the following

Mental Health struggles do not always look like the way people expect Anyone can post that they are being successful, the content or even seem upbeat on the everyday up and go. But we never will know what they are really going through. The glam life doesn't save us from mental health issues.

Live streams can become real -time mental health emergencies

This incident underscores the dangers and possible benefits of live platforms.

The dangers involve:

  • Someone in distress might share a highly vulnerable moment live.

  • Disturbing content can cause trauma to viewers.

  • Algorithms and quick sharing can disseminate harmful content before it is taken down.

Meanwhile, viewers who noticed something was seriously amiss alerted emergency services, facilitating a welfare response.

Compassion is more valuable then Judgement

When dealing with a situation like this, whether online or in person, avoid sensationalizing the events. Refrain from searching for graphic footage on social media. Show empathy for the individual involved and send them positive, healing thoughts.

Mental Health can affect everyone and we still have work to do

Ultimately, the key takeaway isn't specifically about Perez Hilton—it's that mental health crises can impact anyone. Hopefully, he gets the care he needs, and the ensuing discussion focuses more on reducing stigma, recognizing warning signs, and encouraging early help-seeking, rather than on viral clips.

If this story prompts you to consider mental health more broadly in the context of social media, it's also important to question how platforms, creators, audiences, and news outlets can respond in ways that prioritize safety over virality.

Social media has increased the frequency of mental health discussions, yet stigma persists. Public figures often fear that acknowledging their struggles might harm their careers or reputations. Incidents like this highlight the importance of encouraging people to seek help before reaching a crisis. My fellow creators if you are going through it mentally please consider the following : -Build support systems that exist outside of your audience.
