  • Flashback Friday: Madlib

Producers are the foundation to every song on your playlist. Whether the sounds are orchestral, pop or grungy, an artist can only thrive when paired with complimentary production. I fell in love with digital audio orchestrators at 16. Repeating albums from composers such as the late J. Dilla and 9th Wonder introduced me to the wonderful world of sampling. This space was already familiar because of my parents blasting music early Saturday mornings. The soul of 70’s records was warm, bright and overwhelming. That energy exploded through the house in a way that I could never explain without smiling.  Champion Sound , a collaborative project by Jaylib (J. Dilla and Madlib) , was my initial introduction to the rugged-analog sampler. I found myself enticed by his production on Mos Def, now known as Yasiin Bey's album Ecstatic . Madlib  has collaborated with other legends such as the late MF Doom to produce the classic Madvillainy . In recent years, Madlib  joined forces with Gary, Indiana’s rap aficionado Freddie Gibbs. The duo, MadGibbs, dropped noteworthy albums Pinata  and Bandana . His collaborative discography extends longer than this page, but I really wanted to recognize the timely instrumental album “Sound Ancestors” .  What I love about instrumental albums is the ability to create a storyline without influence of lyrics.  “There Is No Time”  starts bright and glowy as it slowly swells but rises in chimes and cymbals. I see myself lying on a bed, waking up to the sun peaking through my window shades. “Rise into the call, I’ll give my life and all”  plays as an appropriate sample on this beat  “The Call” . The innocent chimes play softer as the electric guitars and drums take center stage. I’m no longer comfortably laying on my bed. Instead I’m fully alert preparing to defend myself against the world even when the sun is out. “Theme De Crabtree”  is lighter in energy with sweet melodies and shakers dancing over friendly drum patterns. I imagine walking down the block in my neighborhood, speaking to people passing by, watching kids play and hearing “Got to be conscious, got to be righteous”  whisper to as it does on the track. “Road Of The Lonely”  is the perfect title to describe the next part of this story. The melancholy strings play the emotions of every person putting their dreams before their personal relationships. The sample begs for understanding and companionship on a road less traveled. “Where did I go wrong?” Unable to dwell on the heartbreak we are greeted by the festive track “Loose Goose” . The festivities have a tendency to include cyphers in which “Dirtknock”  plays the best background music.   The story still has me traveling the streets until I stumble upon a hidden gem behind a building on “Hopprock” . The mysterious ambience breaks into chants, claps, and guitar plucks. It’s clear I walked into another world. Was it something someone gave me? What did I drink? What did I eat? I became momentarily relieved by the warmer ambient sounds on “Riddim Chant” . This had to be a time machine because “ Sound Of The Ancestors”  took me back home. African instrumentation moved unapologetically on the intro mellowing into flutes, chimes and drums. They must have seen how nervous I was. Truly, I was overwhelmed because it felt like I was in a silent scene of a Spike Lee movie. Is that an accordion or a harmonica? “One For Quartabe”  whirled me into what felt like the 80’s and glided me into a jazzy seductive mashup on “Right Now” . There was no doubt I was at a 90’s party by “Hang Out” . I almost forgot I was time traveling. Imagine being able to cypher and party with the legends that influenced you. It’s enough to make you cry.  “Two for 2-For Dilla”  was a beautiful ode to a pioneer in this production game. I got to see him on this. Fully aware that I’m in a whole different time period now, I begin to explore comfortably. The festivities continued with guitars and drums of a different cultural influence on “Latino Negro” . I reached the pinnacle of celebration then suddenly, I was violently sucked back into the portal on “The New Normal” . The futuristic sound was alarming at first, but began to mesh with the remnants of the portal by “Chino” . I was walking down the block with more pep in my step than before, with Aretha Franklin crooning on the record. Before I returned to my side of town, I peeked behind the building to catch another glimpse of the portal. It was gone. I would of thought I was hallucinating until I heard the African instrumentation of “Duumbiyay”  reminding me that this journey does not need to be broadcasted but understood.    “Sound Ancestors”  is available for purchase on vinyl. Thank you Madlib .

  • "Bacalao is the Summer Street Anthem You Didn’t Know You Needed" - RawrrzonePicks

We started noticing a significant evolution in the musical repertoire of Rawrrzone Alum NittiIce last year when he released the track "Yo No Se," featuring the talented Rebel Montes. This particular collaboration marked a pivotal moment in his artistic journey, signaling a shift towards a more diverse and eclectic catalogue that resonates with a broader audience. However, it is his latest release, "Bacalao," that we believe truly captures the essence of a summer anthem. This track showcases a stellar collaboration involving notable artists such as A.R. Yum, Goldie Cobain, Tyrone Briggs, and Swizzy Swinton, all of whom bring their unique styles and influences to the project. The production, skillfully crafted by Jo Wabbie, adds an infectious energy that is sure to get listeners moving. The song "Bacalao" does more than just entertain; it serves as a vibrant celebration of both Puerto Rican and Caribbean Spanish cultures, encompassing influences from Dominican, Panamanian, and other Latin American traditions. The visual identity accompanying this release is particularly noteworthy, as it draws inspiration from the lively and colorful Puerto Rican Parade, which is a significant cultural event that showcases the rich heritage and pride of the Puerto Rican community. The visuals are infused with Afro Latino rhythms, seamlessly blending traditional elements with contemporary hip-hop swag, creating a dynamic and engaging experience for viewers and listeners alike. Through this artistic endeavor, NittiIce not only demonstrates his versatility as an artist but also highlights the importance of cultural representation in music. By embracing and celebrating the diverse influences that shape his sound, he invites fans to join him on a journey that honors the roots and traditions of the Caribbean while pushing the boundaries of modern music. As summer approaches, "Bacalao" is poised to become a staple on playlists, radiating a feel-good vibe that perfectly encapsulates the essence of the season and the rich tapestry of cultural influences that inspire it. What caught our attention beyond the catchy beat was the clever wordplay. While fast-paced, the term Bacalao not only means codfish; in this context, it refers to the fake and the haters, dismissing those who detract from their shine. NittiIce's hook alone not only establishes him as the alpha of the track but also demonstrates his versatility, showing that he can master a pen in the style we're used to seeing him in and now excel across multiple lanes and genres. Their arrangement in the video resembled a lively party cypher outside the bodega, a scene that instantly transported viewers back to the vibrant days of street culture. It was reminiscent of the old days when all you needed to spark a block party was a simple fire hydrant, which would become the centerpiece for laughter, music, and camaraderie among neighbors. The bodega, often a hub of local life, served as a backdrop where friends and families gathered, creating an atmosphere charged with energy and connection. The cypher itself, filled with talented individuals sharing their skills, was a microcosm of the larger community, Collaborations such as these bringing dembow culture with artists such as A.R. Yum but being able to mix it with modern day hip hop with NittiIce , Cobain, Briggs and Swinton showing us that Hip Hop is universal and showcasing not just artistry, but also the bonds that tied everyone together. It truly evoked a profound sense of community, where the rhythm of the music harmonized with the pulse of the streets, reminding us of the power of shared experiences and the joy found in coming together, regardless of the challenges faced outside those moments of celebration. • Wu-Tang Closes Out in NYC with Love for the Fans and a Powerful Homage to Hip Hop

There are nights in New York City that feel like something out of a movie—and last night was one of them. You could smell the smoke in the air before even reaching the venue, a reminder that the energy of the city was building toward something powerful. Wu-Tang Clan brought the heartbeat of hip-hop back to life with a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden that was more than a concert—it was a historic tribute to the music, the movement, and the people who helped shape it. For the first time since Hip Hop 50, the city buzzed with the kind of excitement you can’t fake. Wu-Tang didn’t just sell out the Garden—they sold out five shows leading up to it, with the final stop set for July 18th in Pennsylvania. But there was something different about last night. From the moment they started teasing the show online and through local press, fans knew they were cooking up something special. And the moment we stepped into the arena, we felt it—this wasn’t just another show. This was the  moment. The energy exploded from the first beat of “Bring da Ruckus,” but it wasn’t all at once. In true Wu-Tang fashion, they built it up layer by layer. One by one, the members made their way to the stage, each entrance amplifying the crowd’s roar as they took their place. The audience watched closely, counting heads, waiting for that one moment we all hoped for. And just when it seemed like everyone was on stage—boom. During the fourth  track, the anticipation finally snapped as Method Man made his grand entrance. The Garden lost it . The way they led up to it was brilliant—letting the moment breathe, holding back just long enough to let the anticipation grow before unleashing the full power of the Clan. RZA, the general and spiritual backbone of Wu-Tang, officially welcomed us with a powerful message. He made it clear—this wasn’t just a celebration of Wu-Tang’s 30-year journey. It was a ceremony for the culture. A thank you to hip-hop. A reminder of why this movement matters and always will. From there, they delivered . Each Clan member brought their A-game, performing with the same raw energy and lyrical sharpness that made them icons in the first place. The setlist was pure fire—“Da Mystery of Chessboxin’,” “C.R.E.A.M.,” and so many classics that had the crowd rapping along word for word. But it didn’t stop there. Ghostface and Raekwon got the surprises started by bringing out The LOX (Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch) and Havoc from Mobb Deep for a tribute to Biggie that had everyone on their feet. Method Man later turned the Garden into a madhouse when he brought out Redman for their iconic “Da Rockwilder.” And then came Lil' Kim, who lit up the stage with her unforgettable verse from the “Quiet Storm (Remix).” The guest lineup was a dream—hip-hop royalty across generations. Slick Rick, SWV, and Big Daddy Kane hit the stage and reminded us why their voices still command so much respect. It was more than nostalgia—it was a celebration of hip-hop’s rich, soulful roots. Some of the most emotional moments came when the group honored fallen legends—Biz Markie (who passed on this very day in 2021), Nate Dogg, Nipsey Hussle, Guru of Gang Starr, and Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest. Then came a tribute that hit everyone right in the heart—Young Dirty Bastard, the son of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, brought his father’s legacy to life with “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and “Got Your Money.” The resemblance, the voice, the wild charisma—it was like watching ODB reborn on stage. After Inspectah Deck, Method Man, and Raekwon crushed their performance of “C.R.E.A.M.,” the lights dropped. A moment of calm hit the room, and RZA stepped forward again—this time to honor hip-hop itself. Fifty years of influence, struggle, evolution, and celebration. He led the crowd into a thunderous “Wu-Tang Forever” chant that shook the rafters of the Garden. And then came “Triumph”—the perfect closer from their 1997 Wu-Tang Forever  album. It was poetic. It was raw. It was real. That final performance sealed the night as one of those “you had to be there” moments. As someone who lives and breathes hip-hop, this concert didn’t just hit—it healed. It reminded us of the magic that happens when legends don’t just perform, but connect . Wu-Tang didn’t just honor their legacy—they honored the pioneers who came before them, the future artists rising now, and the fans who’ve been riding since the beginning. With their final stop in Philly tonight, one thing’s for sure: what happened at Madison Square Garden will never be duplicated. It wasn’t just a concert—it was the concert of the year , a spiritual gathering for the culture, and a reminder that no matter how the world changes… Wu-Tang is forever.
